Lost Sailor>Saint ...2 in a row..same run?
Just did a precursory search on setlists.net and saw Sailor>Saint played a few times in consecutive days:

11/24/79- Golden Hall - San Diego, CA
11/25/79- Pauley Pavilion, UCLA - Los Angeles, CA

03/30/80- Capitol Theater - Passaic, NJ
03/31/80- Capitol Theater - Passaic, NJ

05/14/80- Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY
05/15/80- Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

09/02/80- War Memorial Auditorium - Rochester, NY
09/03/80- Springfield Civic Center - Springfield, MA

03/13/81- Utica Memorial Auditorium - Utica, NY
03/14/81- Hartford Civic Center - Hartford, CT

Wasn't in the scene in those days..was only 11 years old..anyone have any idea why they did this?

The new songs...

They Did Althea on 12/26, 12/28, 12/30 and 12/31/1980. From the same "album" that was released in 1980. Giving the new songs some air time I guess.

They played 85 shows in 80' and 81 shows in 81'(give or take a show or two)

Lost Sailor -> Saint
80'-50 times played
81'-37 times played

Althea
80'-59 times played
81'-44 times played

That would put Sailor/Saint being played at a little more than half of the shows over that two year span and Althea at about 2 out of three. Being on the scene I can tell you that was far to often.

I think I saw Little Red Rooster at each of my first 5 shows.

Funny it was the song that popped my head open at the 5/13/83 show - sent me running for shelter. Still on the long slow recovery from that. I saw them drop a whole bunch of folks with that same song at Ventura one year. Literally people were collapsing all around us, it was a warm day, but not that warm. Phil dropped a bomb and a bunch of people buckled under the weight of it. I remember the look of panic on peoples faces, there was some power there that can not be explained. Not gonna happen with your home stereo...unless you are John Meyer.

Some seriously scarey fun going on.

You'll find the same patterns in fall of 1982, when Touch of Grey, Women Are Smarter, Throwing Stones and Day Job were played almost every night.Probably getting the new songs down, as Sense said, and/or playing them for the local folks who might only see one show.

Ain't that the truth. anyone who saw them in the early to mid 80's is still probably sick of Day Job! In Robert Hunter's own words:
"This song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of fans. Seriously."

They needed to change the lyrics to "get a day job" since most tour rats didn't have one, singing "keep your day job" was some what pointless. Especially for the trustafarian types.

Yep, In 1982, Throwing stones was played 11 shows in a row, from 9/17 to 12/26 . Also in '77 Estimated Prophet and Samson & Delilah were played 51 and 41 times respectively out of 61 shows played.

I remember hearing a show that i thought was '83, but could have been (probably was)'82, where Bobby says.."we're going to badger you guys with a few of the new tunes until we get 'em right", just before going into T Stones. I'm guessing it was somwewhere in this run of 11 in a row.

Didn't they do Dark Star--St. Stephen--Eleven back to back? Come to think about it, check the setlists for Sept '71 through Europe '72. When you have new songs and/or are promoting an l.p., you showcase the material.
